Marine Fuel Testing Programme

Marine Fuel Testing Programme

Vessels propelled by slow and medium speed engines typically burn heavy marine fuel oil (the abbreviation of which is known officially as “HFO” but is usually referred to as “bunker”) in their main engines. These vessels also consume a lighter grade of fuel called Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) or in some cases Marine Gas Oil (MGO) in their generators.

Since the Global Sulphur Cap of 0.5% came into effect on 1st Jan 2020, ships without scrubbers will switch from High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) to compliant fuel: Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). The latter possesses diverse properties, which depends on the various region blending and production methods. Since 2020, ship operators have resorted to VLSFO, other new fuel grades and blended fuel oils which have not been mentioned on ISO 8217 marine fuel specifications.

The new fuels make issues regarding fuel quality even more serious than before and can easily result in a “dead ship” that cannot be re-started at sea.

The Maritec Fuel Testing Programme is specially designed for ship owners and operators whose vessels receive marine fuels at ports all around the world. Our fuel testing programme doubles as both a means of machinery damage prevention and a fuel management programme to highlight potential problems before they arise.

We have a wide crowd of international customers who attends our programme. These customers can utilize our global express courier service to send fuel samples that was collected by the vessel’s Chief Engineer to our laboratories for testing prior to the actual usage of the fuel by the ship.

Since we strive for the absolute reassurance of our customers, the Maritec Fuel Testing Programme offers additional test parameters on top of those listed in ISO 8217.  Analysis results are compared against the ISO 8217 standard for the respective fuel grade and is followed by operations and technical advice, which covers:

  •  Fuel Usage & Storage
  •  On-board Fuel Treatment
  •  Recommendations for Maximising Fuel Efficiency
  •  Detection of Waste Lube Oils and Other Contaminants in the Fuel
  •  Fuel Ignition and Combustion Quality

The fuel analysis reports will be sent to the customer within 24 hours after the fuel sample has been received by Maritec. We operate 365 days a year, including Weekends and Public Holidays
