We were glad to be a part of a seminar held and organised by the UK Chamber of Shipping (COS): Safety & Environment Committee on 19 September 2024.
A valued expert of our CTI-Maritec family presented on the pertinent subject of Ship Recycling in accordance with the Hong Kong Convention (HKC), followed by a Q&A. Through his insightful explanations of key elements of the regulation, he demonstrated the pressing need for the Maritime industry to pay due diligence towards ensuring mindful compliance.
The end-to-end process, focus on thorough completion and maintenance of the Inventory of Hazardous Material (IHM) Part I reports for all vessels, the debatable link between HKC compliance and ESG, keeping track of compliance deadlines, and the smart approach towards Responsible Ship Recycling (RSR) were dwelled into with vigour.

With the convention’s conditions met in June of last year, the HKC will enter into force on 26 June 2025. Upon the HKC’s entry into force, ships sent for recycling will be required to carry an International IHM Certificate. Authorised ship recycling facilities will be required to provide a Ship Recycling plan specific to each individual vessel to be recycled. Furthermore, governments will be required to ensure that recycling facilities under their jurisdiction comply with the convention. It is also important to note, Liberia flagged vessels need to comply with the regulation prior to the set deadline due to early implementation requirements.
